Leylah Fernandez ended last season making the semi-final at the Hong Kong Open before a defeat to Victoria Mboko. She was inconsistent at times but did pick up two titles in Washington and Osaka. Her record at the slams wasn’t great, with her best result being a third-round appearance at the Australian Open. She is currently ranked 22 in the world.
Dayana Yastremksa is ranked just five places below Fernandez in the world rankings. She began her season with a victory, but she was made to work for the win against Talia Gibson. The Australian served for both sets but Yastremska fought back in both to win 7-6 (3) 7-6 (4).
Fernandez leads the head-to-head 2-1, though Yastremska won their most recent match in Nottingham last year. Yastremska was not at her best in round one and she will need to improve her game significantly if she is to defeat the former US Open finalist.
