Learner Tien ended his breakthrough season in fine fashion as he won his first tour-level title in Metz, defeating Cameron Norrie in the final. That capped off a fine campaign for the American, who is inside the top 30 of the world rankings and heads into this event as the commanding favourite. He made the final here last season, losing to Joao Fonseca after taking the first set.

Rafael Jodar is his first opponent in the group stage. His last event was back in early November, but it was a successful one, as he won a Challenger event in Charlottesville. That was his third title of the season and the Spaniard is currently ranked 168 in the world.   

Jodar has never competed on the ATP Tour, and he is going to be facing a top-30 player in the world in Tien. This should be a thoroughly comfortable victory for the American.
