Learner Tien enjoyed the best run of his young career during the Asian swing. It began with a respectable quarter-final appearance in Hangzhou. The 19-year-old then competed in Beijing for the China Open, winning four matches in a row to make his first final on the ATP Tour. It would end with a defeat against Jannik Sinner, but despite the quick turnaround, Tien won another three matches in succession to make the round-of-16 at the Shanghai Masters.
He takes on Nuno Borges for a place in the second-round. The Portuguese also reached the round-of-16 in Shanghai but has already competed at an indoor event prior to the final Masters 1000 of the season. However, he would lose to former world number one Daniil Medvedev in round one of the Vienna Open, despite taking the Russian to three sets.
Both of these players are evenly matched and ranked within a few places of one another. Tien is well rested after his exploits in Asia and will want to continue the momentum with a strong first-round display against the inconsistent Borges.
