Learner Tien began his Next Gen ATP Finals campaign in the worst possible fashion as he lost to Rafael Jodar in his first group stage match. The top seed had four match points but could not convert any of them and made a number of uncharacteristic errors during the contest. The American, who did reach the final of the tournament last year, will be hoping to get back on track against Martin Landaluce.

Landaluce also lost his first match against Nicolai Budkov Kjaer. The Spaniard had won their three previous meetings, but the Spaniard was not at his best here, losing 4-1 3-4 (7) 4-2 4-3 (4). These two have played on one previous occasion, with Landaluce winning in the quarter-finals of the Wimbledon juniors in 2022.

Tien was well below his usual standard in his first match but has the quality and the temperament to get back on track with a convincing win.
