Learner Tien has made it through to the last eight of this event courtesy of a hard-fought and dramatic 36-game victory against Miomir Kecmanovic the other day. Tien had needed a win after a first round loss to Marin Cilic at the Dallas Open last week, having been excellent on his way to the Australian Open quarter-finals last month.
Frances Tiafoe comes into this one on the back of his own hard-fought round of 16 victory the other day, defeating qualifier Zachary Svajda after he had eased past Rinky Hijikata. Tiafoe also struggled at the Dallas Open, needing to come from behind against Terence Atmane before then losing 7-5, 6-1 to Sebastian Korda.
This game is expected to have a few games and a few long ones at that, but not necessarily because of the quality but because of the lack of consistency from both at the moment.
