Learner Tien defeated Sebastian Baez in straight sets to advance at the Cincinnati Open. The 20-year-old, who reached the semi-finals of a Masters 1000 event for the first time in his career in Montreal, won 6-3 7-6 (4) after one hour and 25 minutes. He is closing in on the top 10 of the world rankings.
His next opponent is fellow countryman Frances Tiafoe. The 28-year-old enjoyed a comfortable win over Lorenzo Sonego in the previous round. Tiafoe required surgery last week to remove a cyst from his hand, but he was completely untroubled against Sonego as wasn’t broken and won 87% of his points on first serve, winning 6-3 6-4.
The head-to-head is locked at 1-1. Tiafoe defeated a 17-year-old Tien at the 2023 US Open, with the youngster winning their most recent match at Delray Beach earlier this year. Tien is the favourite, but he is also battling a persistent arm injury at the moment. Tiafoe will take confidence from his last performance.
