Learner Tien is into the third-round of the Shanghai Masters after a straight sets win over compatriot Zachary Svajda. Tien was not challenged on serve, as he did not concede a break point opportunity and won 88% of his first serve points. He broke Svajda’s serve at the end of both sets, completing a 7-5 7-5 victory after one hour and 25 minutes. His best Masters 1000 result of the campaign was a semi-final appearance at the Canadian Open two months ago.

He now faces Casper Ruud after the Norwegian got past home favourite Bu Yunchaokete. The 27-year-old started strongly and kept his composure in the second set tiebreak to win 6-1 7-6 (2). Ruud suffered a first-round defeat at the Japan Open to Luciano Darderi last week, so this victory should therefore provide a timely confidence boost.

Ruud possesses the heavier forehand and stronger serve, but Tien has been the more consistent hard court player across 2026.
