Rising star Learner Tien came through a see-saw battle with compatriot Marcos Giron in the first round, eventually coming through in five sets to continue his impressive ascent up the world rankings.

The 20-year-old American, who won the Next Gen ATP Finals in December, reached the fourth round in Melbourne last year and big things are expected of him in 2026.

After losing the first set against Elias Ymer, Alexander Shevchenko moved up a gear to take the next three and reach the second round of the Australian Open for the first time in his career.

The Kazakhstani player is a solid performer, but generally prefers clay to hard courts. With Tien on an upward trajectory and likely to be more relaxed after this first-round battle, we expect the American to progress.
