Kimberly Birrell got past number six seed Xinyu Wang in three sets in the first-round of the Libema Open. The Australian didn’t lose serve throughout the whole match but did come out second best in the second set tiebreak. Nevertheless, she responded well to race ahead in the third and win 7-5 6-7 6-1.
She now takes on Yue Yuan in the next stage of the tournament. Yuan only qualified for the event as a lucky loser after Camila Osorio was forced to withdraw from the event before her first-round match against Anastasija Sevastova. Yuan completely dominated her encounter against the Latvian, winning 80% of her first serve points as she wrapped up a 6-3 6-3 victory.
They’ve played once before and it took place earlier this year, with Birrell beating Yuan 7-5 7-5 in the first-round of the ATX Open in Texas. We think this will be a closer match between the pair as the Chinese player is coming off the back of a fine victory but we still predict the Australian to come through this one.
