Kimberly Birrell vs Ekaterina Alexandrova prediction

Kimberly Birrell showed considerable resilience in the first-round of the US Open as she came from a set down to beat Petra Marcinko. The Australian saved a match point late in the second set before eventually taking the tiebreak and completing the comeback, winning 3-6 7-6 (4) 6-3. It was Birrell’s first main draw victory at Flushing Meadows, ending a difficult recent run that had included straight set defeats in Toronto, Cincinnati and Monterrey.

Ekaterina Alexandrova is her next opponent. The Russian produced a fine display in the opening round as she easily beat McCartney Kessler. Alexandrova needed only 66 minutes to win 6-2 6-2. The 18th seed was dominant behind serve, winning 83% of her first serve points. This was a welcome response for Alexandrova after recent defeats to Sara Bejlek and Clara Tauson in Cincinnati and Monterrey respectively. She did advance to the quarter-finals of the Canadian Open last month, beating world number one Aryna Sabalenka. 

Birrell’s fighting qualities make her dangerous, but Alexandrova possesses significantly greater first-strike power.
