Kimberly Birrell vs Donna Vekic prediction

Kimberly Birrell’s best run on grass over the past month saw her make the quarter-finals of the Birmingham Classic. The Australian did win three matches in a row last week in Eastbourne, including qualifying and a first-round win against Sofia Kenin, but lost in the round-of-16 to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. The Australian has failed to pick up a victory at a Grand Slam since January 2023 and hasn't ever won at a major outside her home slam.

Donna Vekic looked to have turned a corner at the Bad Homburg Open after a period of poor form as she beat Diana Shanider 6-3 6-3 in a rematch of last year’s final in the first-round. Shen then took the first set against Linda Noskova in the next stage but the Czech fought back to get the better of Vekic and advance. The Croatian has fond memories of last year’s Wimbledon as she made the semi-finals of a slam for the first time.

The head-to-head currently stands at 1-1, with both matches taking place at Grand Slams. Birrell shocked Vekic in the second-round of the 2019 Australian Open but Vekic beat the Australian in the first-round of last year’s US Open.

The pressure will be on Vekic with so many points to defend but she should get off to a winning start in round one.
