Kimberly Birrell overcame a dreadful start to beat Petra Marcinko and get through to the next round in Austin. Birrell did not win a game in the first set but recovered in sets two and three to win 0-6 6-3 6-4 after one hour and 55 minutes. The Australian’s best result of the season so far was a semi-final appearance at the Adelaide International last month.
She now faces Caroline Dolehide for a place in the last eight. Dolehide made it three wins in a row, including qualifying, as she comfortably got past Lulu Sun in straight sets. The American broke four times and saved an impressive nine out of 10 break point opportunities as she won 6-2 6-3.
Birrell has more matches and victories under her belt this season, but she cannot afford a similar start against Dolehide, who has five wins from six matches in 2026 so far.
