Kimberly Birell ended a run of four matches without a win in the first-round of the Cincinnati Open as she thrashed Anna Blinkova 6-2 6-1. It was a superb performance from the Australian but she would go no further after a defeat to 2024 finalist Jessica Pegula in the next stage of the tournament. Birrell offered some fight in the first set but she could only create one break point opportunity and also committed nine double faults.
Her opponent in the first-round here is Anastasia Zakharova. The Russian failed to reach the main draw of Cincinnati as she lost to Maddison Inglis in the second stage of qualifying despite taking the first set. She is ranked exactly 100 in the world and does have a title to her name on the ITF circuit this season, having won on clay in Zaragoza during the middle of April.
This is the first match at WTA Tour level but they have faced each other once before in the first qualifying stage of the Thailand Open last year, with Zakharova coming from a set down to win. Birrell is the higher ranked player and has reached two WTA quarter-finals on hard courts this season. She should be regarded as the favourite to win.
