Kimberly Birrell is through to the quarter-finals in Austin after defeating Caroline Dolehide in straight sets. Both players exchanged breaks at the start of the match, but Birrell would break again in the ninth game and served it out to clinch the first set. She maintained her level at the start of the second, winning four straight games to pull ahead, going on to win 6-4 6-2 after one hour and 26 minutes.
She now goes up against a fellow compatriot in Ajla Tomljanovic. The Australian picked up her best win of the season as she came from a set down to defeat second seed Iva Jovic. The 18-year-old, who reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open last month, edged clear after the first set but began to leak errors as Tomljanovic won 4-6 6-4 6-4.
This could be a close encounter, but Tomljanovic has momentum on her side after wins over Jovic and Venus Williams. She also leads the head-to-head 1-0 after defeating Birrell in the qualifying stages of the 2022 Canadian Open.
