Katie Volynets is in strong form as she begins her China Open campaign. The American’s most important recent result was her WTA 125 title win in Philadelphia without dropping a set, defeating Tereza Valentova 6-3 7-5 in the final. She carried that improvement into Seoul, reaching the quarter-finals with convincing wins over Elvina Kalieva and Kamilla Rakhimova. However, her run would end against eventual winner Kimberly Birrell. Volynets controlled the opening set was but was unable to maintain the advantage as Birrell turned the match around to win 2-6 6-2 7-5.

Her opening round opponent is Robin Montgomery. Her highlight of the campaign was a maiden WTA title at the Libema Open during the grass court season. She still had to qualify for the US Open but then lost her first-round match against Maria Sakkari. Montgomery also competed in Seoul last week but failed to make it out of round one. 

Volynets will be viewed as the favourite for this one.
