It’s never easy facing a player competing in her home Grand Slam but that’s what awaits Katie Volynets as she takes on French player Clara Burel. Whilst Volynets rightly comes into the game as favourite, being ranked far higher than Burel, who is coming off the back of an ACL injury, the latter has demonstrated her quality in the past, having previously been ranked inside the top 50.
Volynets hasn’t made it to the third round yet at Roland-Garros but has reached the second round twice before. She’s had a decent season so far and has looked good on the clay court, so winning at least one match in this tournament should be her minimum expectation.
Whilst there are question marks over Burel’s fitness following such a long stretch out of action, playing at the French Open should give her that extra burst of energy and fight that will really push Volynets to her limits. It would therefore be no surprise to see this one go the distance and backing a three-set-match with Volynets eventually winning is a worthy move.
