Ann Li will hope it’s a case of third time lucky against Katie Volynets.
The fourth seed has lost her previous two meetings with her fellow American, including a 6-4 6-3 loss in Auckland this time last year.
Volynets came through qualifying after falling at that stage in Brisbane, but is teetering on the brink of dropping back outside the top 100 having had a tricky spell in the second part of last season.
Li came unstuck against a qualifier in Brisbane in her first match since October and she will need to blast away the early rust to avoid a familiar story against a player who knows how to beat her.
Li sits at 37 in the world after enjoying the best year of her career in 2025 and while the smart money may be on her to break her duck here, it may offer great value to go with the underdog.
