Katie Boulter won for the first time in four matches as she beat Yue Yuan in the first-round. The former British number one has looked out of sorts for the last month and did go 3-1 down int the first set but recovered well to edge in front. She won four straight games in the second and despite failing to serve out the match, she broke Yuan in the very next service game to seal a morale-boosting 6-4 6-3 win.
Her opponent in the next round is Viktorija Golubic. The 32-year-old produced a strong display as she thrashed Lucia Bronzetti 6-1 6-3 in her first-round match. Golubic breezed through the first set with the drop of just one game and then opened a 3-0 lead in the second. She was pegged back by Bronzetti but broke yet again to register her first outdoor hard court win on the WTA Tour this season.
A win after a period of poor form will be vital for Boulter’s confidence ahead of the US Open and she should feel confident about her chances against the lower ranked Golubic.
