Katie Boulter’s poor run of form continued as she lost in the first-round of the Canadian Open to Kayla Cross. The former British number one served for the first set but went on to lose in straights. That extended her losing run to five matches, and Boulter is without a victory since the quarter-final win at Queen’s Club against world number two Elena Rybakina. She did win a title earlier in the season at the Ostrava Open, but this is Boulter’s worst run for quite some time.
She faces Katie Volynets in the first-round of the Cincinnati Open. The American reached the quarter-finals of the Memphis Classic last time out, losing to Darja Vidmanova. She then decided not to compete in Toronto.
Boulter leads the head-to-head 1-0 after a comprehensive win in the Ostrava semi-finals earlier this year. However, she is operating well below the level she was at back then, and Volynets is likely to be far more competitive on home soil.
