Katerina Siniakova began her Asian swing with a victory in the first-round against Magda Linette at the China Open. She looked on course for round three after comfortably taking the first set against Elina Svitolina, but she would go on to lose in three. The Czech’s best singles result of the season remains a round-of-16 appearance at Indian Wells, where she beat defending champion Mirra Andreeva along the way.

Her first-round opponent in Wuhan is Liudmila Samsonova. The 27-year-old also suffered a second-round loss at the China Open, following a three set defeat to Karolina Muchova. Samsonova achieved her best result of the season last month, following a run to the semi-finals of the Guadalajara Open. This included an impressive victory over Marta Kostyuk.

The head-to-head is locked at 2-2, with Samsonova winning their only hard court match as the Canadian Open three years ago. There is little to separate the pair.
