Katerina Siniiakova retired in the deciding set of her opening match at the Canadian Open against Kamilla Rakhimova. The doubles specialist’s best result in singles this year was a run to the round-of-16 at Indian Wells. This included an impressive win over defending champion Mirra Andreeva.

She faces Jessica Bouzas Maneiro at the Cincinnati Open. The Spaniard won her first-round match against Anna Bondar. She recovered from going an early break down to win the first set and she raced clear in the second as she opened up a 4-0 lead. However, Bondar fought back and reeled off four games in a row to draw level. The set went to a tiebreak, with Bouzas Maneiro winning the last two points to clinch a 6-3 7-6 (5) win. Bouzas Maneiro has reached two tour-level quarter-finals this season, but inconsistent results elsewhere have resulted in her ranking dropping to 90 in the world.
