Karolina Pliskova advanced to the quarter-finals at Queens Club after her opponent Victoria Mboko retired from their match in the second set. Pliskova had taken the first set 6-2, but Mboko was applying pressure in the second when the injury occurred. She was leading 4-3 and had a break point, but then suffered a hard fall and was unable to continue.
The former world number one now plays Donna Vekic for a place in the last four. The Croatian, who only entered the draw as a lucky loser, beat Marie Bouzkova to progress to the next round. Vekic took the first set after a lengthy tiebreak and largely controlled the second to win 7-6 (9) 6-3.
Pliskova leads the head-to-head 7-4 and 1-0 on grass. They did play against each other two months ago at the Linz Open, with Vekic winning on that occasion. The Croatian does have some momentum on her side and can excel on grass, but Pliskova’s recent form has been largely encouraging.
