Karolina Muchova vs Victoria Mboko prediction
Victoria Mboko booked a spot in her second WTA 1000 final with a dominant victory overt two-time finalist Jelena Ostapenko in Doha.
The Canadian was at her big-hitting, best as she rampaged to a 6-3 6-2 success over the Latvian.
It caps a remarkable 13-month rise for the teeanger, who has shot from 333 in the world last January to what will now be her debut in the top 10 come the start of next week.
Standing in the way of the 19-year-old marking the feat with a title is Czech star Karolina Muchova.
The 14th seed hit the comeback trail to end Maria Sakkari’s run with a 3-6 6-4 6-1 victory to secure a spot in her seventh career final and her first since Beijing in 2024.
This will be their maiden showdown and it will a tough call given the fabulous tennis and sheer resilience both players have produced this week.
Muchova’s history suggests nerves could play a role given the Seoul triumph in 2019 is her sole success in her previous six finals.
In contrast, Mboko is into her fourth career final and they have all come within the last seven months. The tenth seed won both of her showpiece matches in Montreal and Hong Kong last year but came up short in the final in Adelaide last month.
Muchova’s guile and ability to turn slice defence into aggressive attack gives her more tactical options on the day, but Mboko will have the greater overall power and if she can channel it in the right way, she could well be two for two in WTA finals.
That said, it should be close and a flutter on over 19.5 games or each player winning a set may offer better value and less risk than plumping for the outright winner.
