Karolina Muchova continued her fine record against Sorana Cirstea to advance at the China Open. These two faced each other in the US Open just last month, with Muchova coming through a tight three setter. This was a far more comfortable win for the Czech as she broke twice at the start of the match and only conceded one break point overall, defeating the Romanian 6-2 6-3.
Paula Badosa marked her return to the tour with a straight sets victory over Antonia Ruzic. The Spaniard dominated the first set and dug deep in the second, breaking Ruzic as she served to send the match into a decider at 6-5 up. Badosa raised her game in the tiebreak to win 6-2 7-6.
Badosa leads the head-to-head 2-1 but this is their first match against each other on a hard court. The Spaniard is still getting up to speed after her back injury and she is likely to find it tough against Muchova, a very difficult player to face in these conditions and a finalist of the event last year. Muchova has a strong chance of making the round-of-16.
