Karolina Muchova advanced to the round-of-16 after a hard-fought victory over Ajla Tomljanovic. She dropped the first set but levelled the match up after controlling the second. Despite conceding an early break, Muchova looked to be on the verge of victory when serving for the match at 5-3, only for Tomljanovic to break back. Eventually, the world number 20 edged clear in the tiebreak to win 4-6 6-1 7-6 (5).
She now faces Ekaterina Alexandrova. The world number 10 got her season off to a winning start after defeating Sofia Kenin in straight sets She was broken when serving for the first set, only to take the lead on a tiebreak. The second was a more straight-forward affair, with Alexandrova winning 7-6 (2) 6-3 after one hour and 31 minutes.
Alexandrova leads the WTA head-to-head 2-1. Their most recent meeting was in the semi-final of the Linz Open last year, with the Russian comfortably winning in straight sets. This could be a close match, but Alexandrova will start as the favourite.
