Former quarter-finalist Karen Khachanov bids to reach the Madrid round of 16 for the third time in a row when he meets Tommy Paul.

The Russian has followed up his push to the last four in Barcelona with more solid tennis in Madrid, edging out the towering Reilly Opelka 7-6 7-6 last time out. 

Paul matched that with a resilient and clutch win over rising Brazilian star Joao Fonseca, digging his way out of trouble to edge victory via two tie-breaks.

Paul leads the head-to-head 1-0 having won a tight encounter on the hard courts of Miami three years ago and if he can face off tough moments like he did against Fonseca, he will be a tough nut to crack at the Caja Magica.
