Karen Khachanov recovered from a slow start to begin his US Open campaign with a victory. His opponent Nishesh Basavareddy took the first set, but the Russian produced a mostly solid performance after that to win 6-7 6-3 7-5 6-1. Khachanov won 83% of his points on first serve and hit 58 winners overall.

His opponent will be Kamil Majchrzak as he won his first-round match against Hugo Dellien. The Pole looked set to wrap it up in straight sets after going 4-2 in front, but Dellien fought back to win the set on a tiebreak and go a break up in the fourth. Majchrzak weathered the storm and came back to win 6-1 6-4 6-7 6-4.

Khachanov leads the head-to-head 4-0 and beat Majchrzak in straight sets in the fourth-round of Wimbledon last month. Nevertheless, this will be their first meeting on a hard court, and the Pole has eight wins from his last nine matches after success on the Challenger Tour earlier this month.

Khachanov is still a strong favourite given his greater pedigree and recent form, which includes a runners-up spot in Toronto, but this will be a test.
