Karen Khachanov vs Juncheng Shang prediction
After a period of fine form over the summer, Karen Khachanov’s form has stalled as we enter the final leg of the season. Strong results in the North American Masters events, which included a final in Toronto, set the Russian up nicely for the US Open but he could only make the second-round after a surprise defeat to Kamil Majchrzak, as he lost from two sets up. After a month off, he returned in Beijing but lost in round one to Alexandre Muller despite having the lead once more.
Juncheng Shang is his opponent in round two of the Shanghai Masters as the Russian received a bye. The wildcard from China produced a strong performance to defeat Aleksandar Kovacevoic 6-4 3-6 6-3 after a first-round match which nearly exceeded two hours. This was just his second victory since returning to the tour following a foot injury which kept him out for close to six months.
Shang’s aggressive game, along with home support, makes this a potentially tough opening for Khachanov in Shanghai. His quality should see him through, but he will have to work hard for victory.
