Karen Khachanov vs Ben Shelton prediction
Karen Khachanov reached his first Masters final since 2018 as he defeated Alexander Zverev in three sets at the Canadian Open. Khachanov was 3-1 down in the deciding set tiebreak but staged a fine comeback to win 6-3 4-6 7-6. He also saved a match point at 6-5 down in the third set, with Zverev netting a return after looking to attack a second serve from Khachanov. It wasn’t the most high quality match, with the Russian committing 17 errors on his forehand side, but he’s been in strong form over the last two months.
He will go up against Ben Shelton in the final after he defeated Taylor Fritz 6-4 6-3. Fritz had dropped serve just one in his previous three matches but was under attack from Shelton at the baseline almost immediately, with the 22-year-old earning six break points across Fritz’s first three service games alone. Shelton was heading out of the tournament against Flavio Cobolli in the last-16 but since that comeback victory, he has registered back-to-back straight sets wins against top 10 players in Fritz and Alex de Minaur.
Shelton leads the head-to-head 1-0, beating Khachanov earlier this year in the third-round of Indian Wells. Both will be desperate for their first ever Masters title, but Shelton has looked the more convincing player heading into the final and we give him the edge.
