Karen Khachanov defeated Joao Fonseca in three sets to reach the round-of-16 in Paris. The Russian, who won the tournament in 2018, took a convincing lead after the first set and raised his game at the end of the decider to win 6-1 3-6 6-3. This was an impressive win for Khachanov, with Fonseca having won his first ATP 500 title in Basel last week.
He now goes up against Alex de Minaur. The Australian was not at his best in the previous stage of the tournament but still beat Gabriel Diallo in three sets. Diallo was 5-0 up in the first set tiebreak and had three set points but De Minaur saved them all and took the set. The Canadian would break in the second to level the match up, but the world number six created more opportunities on the Diallo serve towards the end of the match, winning 7-6 (8) 4-6 6-3.
Khachanov does lead the head-to-head 2-1 and 1-0 indoors. Nevertheless, De Minaur is likely to raise his game here and will be the favourite to advance.
