Karen Khachanov overcame Arthur Ferry in a close match to advance at the Shanghai Masters. All three sets were decided by tiebreaks, with the Russian winning 7-6 (6) 6-7 (5) 7-6 (2). The Russian’s form has picked up lately, following a run to the semi-finals of the US Open for the second time in his career, and an impressive win over Felix Auger-Aliassime in Beijing last week. He will now face Adrian Mannarino.

The veteran produced his biggest win of the season in the previous round, beating Roland Garros finalist Flavio Cobolli. Mannarino dominated the first set, and despite Cobolli drawing level in the second, the 38-year-old improved once more to win 6-1 4-6 6-3. The Frenchman also got past Nikoloz Basilashvili in the opening round, with the Georgian retiring in the second set. 

Khachanov holds a commanding 5-0 lead in their head-to-head record. His superior power is likely to overwhelm Mannarino at times.
