Kaja Juvan advanced to the next stage of the tournament in Austin after a straight sets win over Claire Liu. The first set was straight-forward for Juvan, who broke in the third game and consolidated in her service games to take the lead. She looked set for a comfortable win after going 5-2 up but twice failed to serve out the match as Liu reeled off four games in a row. Juvan kept her composure and won the last seven points in the tiebreak to seal a 6-2 7-6 (1) win.
She now faces Peyton Stearns. The American came from a set down to beat Francesca Jones. Stearns went 3-0 up but her level dropped as Jones won the next six games to take the set. Despite that setback, Stearns was largely dominant in the next two sets as she won 3-6 6-3 6-2 after two hours and one minute.
The higher-ranked Stearns will enter this match as the favourite, as she aims for a first quarter-final of the season.
