Jordan Thompson has competed in just one tournament since his run to the fourth-round of Wimbledon. It was not a successful one as he lost 6-2 6-2 to Adrian Mannarino in the first-round of the Cincinnati Open. Thompson has been plagued by injury problems this season and had to retire from his last-16 match against Taylor Fritz at the All England Club. He performed well here last season, making the fourth-round.
His opponent Corentin Moutet began his North American hard court swing with a brilliant display in Washington. He defeated former world number one Daniil Medvedev on his way to the semi-finals, where he lost to eventual winner Alex de Minaur. Moutet’s form since then has dipped, only making the second-round of both Toronto and Cincinnati.
Moutet and Thompson faced each other for the first time earlier this season, with the Frenchman coming out on top in the first-round of Indian Wells in a three set encounter. Despite Thompson’s injury problems, he is always a threat in a best of five set match and we can envision this going to four sets or possibly the full distance.
