Jordan Thompson shrugged off any injury concerns as he recovered from going a set down to defeat Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard for the third time already this season. Thompson only gave up two break points in the whole match but still had to dig deep to win 3-6 6-3 7-6. He now takes on Brandon Nakashima for a place in the third-round.
Nakashima suffered two early exits in Monte-Carlo and Barcelona but managed to reel off two victories in Madrid and then take the first set against Daniil Medvedev in the fourth-round. The American struggled to maintain that level as the match wore on and fell to a 3-6 6-1 6-4 defeat to the 2021 US Open champion. Despite that disappointment, Nakashima should take some encouragement from the level he was able to perform at against an experienced opponent.
They have already played each other on six occasions with Nakashima leading the head-to-head 4-2, though this will be their first encounter on clay. The matches between the pair have often been very evenly matched and we can’t see that changing. Nakashima has the slightly more secure game and we’re favouring him to win in three sets.
