Jordan Thompson got off and running at Flushing Meadows as he beat Corentin Moutet in four sets. Thompson dominated the first two sets and overcame a complete slump in the third to win 6-2 6-4 1-6 6-3. Moutet had performed to a higher standard in the lead up to this slam, with superior results during this hard court summer swing, but Thompson brings his level at the majors, having made the fourth-round here last year and at this year’s Wimbledon.
He now faces Adrian Mannarino after he comfortably swept aside out-of-form Tallon Griekspoor in straight sets. Mannarino dominated after the first set, winning 7-5 6-4 6-0 and he backs up his run at Cincinnati, which saw him advance to the fourth-round after getting through qualifying.
The head-to-head is 6-4 in favour of Mannarino but Thompson leads 2-1 on outdoor hard court. They played earlier this month in Cincinnati, with the Frenchman outclassing Thompson 6-2 6-2 in the first-round. Thompson is a bigger threat in a best of five set match and we can envision this being very close.
