Joao Fonseca reached his maiden ATP 500 semi-final with an impressive comeback against Denis Shapovalov.
The Brazilian was leading 3-6 6-3 4-1 when the Canadian opted to retire, allowing the South American to become just the second player from his country to reach this stage of an ATP tournament at this level.
The world number 46 will now meet Jaume Munar for the first time after the Spaniard progressed leading 6-3 when Felix Auger-Aliassime also retired.
Munar sits just four places better off in the rankings and is playing some of the best tennis of his career.
That said, he has a poor record in the last four of ATP events and Fonseca certainly has more firepower overall.
Both will see it as a huge opportunity to reach a final given how unlikely the match-up would have been for this stage heading into the tournament and it feels like it could be a big moment for Fonseca as he attempts to live up to the hype.
