Joao Fonseca got his first win of the season as he beat Thiago Moura Monteiro in the first-round. The Brazilian has endured a frustrating start to the campaign, with an early Australian Open exit followed up a failure to defend his title in Buenos Aires, but he was back on form here as he did not even concede a break point on his way to a 7-6 (1) 6-1 win.

He now takes on Ignacio Buse in the next stage of the competition. He came from a set and a break down to beat Igor Ribeiro Marcondes. Buse looked in deep trouble as Marcondes went 4-2 up in the second, just two games from victory. However, he fought back and staved off a number of break points in the decider to win 4-6 7-5 6-4. Buse saved 12 out of 14 break points overall.

There is so much home support behind the third seed, and he’ll hope to deliver another strong performance against Buse, who was far from his best in the first-round.
