Joao Fonseca began his Cincinnati Open campaign with a straight sets win over Botic van de Zandschulp. Fonseca was pegged back after going a break up in the second set but managed to get the job done on a tiebreak to win 6-4 7-6 (2) after one hour and 47 minutes. He converted all three of his break point opportunities.
He will now face Christopher O’Connell for a place in the round-of-16. O’Connell made it four straight wins including qualifying after his opponent Casper Ruud retired in the second set. The Australian was leading 7-5 1-2 when the three-time Grand Slam finalist decided that he could not continue. He had not won a match at Masters 1000 level in 2026 prior to this event.
O’Connell has done exceptionally well to reach round three of a Masters event, but this a match that Fonseca will be expected to win comfortably. He should have too much firepower for O’Connell on this quick surface.
