Joao Fonseca’s Canadian Open campaign ended at the round-of-16 stage, as he was beaten by eventual winner Ben Shelton in straight sets. The Brazilian reached the quarter-finals of Roland Garros earlier this season, but he is still searching for greater consistency on the tour.
He received a bye in the first-round and now faces Botic van de Zandshuclp. The Dutchman defeated former world number one Daniil Medvedev in Toronto, as he also lost in the round-of-16 after a straight sets defeat to Jakub Mensik. That was his best result at a Masters 1000 event this year. He went an early break down against Alexander Shevchenko in the first-round of this event, but he came back to win 6-4 6-4.
The head-to-head is locked at 1-1 after two indoor matches. Fonseca won the first match at the 2024 Davis Cup, with Van de Zandschulp winning the next encounter at the European Open a year later. Van de Zandschulp has enough quality on this surface to prevent this from being straight-forward for Fonseca, who was also hampered by an ankle problem towards the end of his match with Shelton.
