Joao Fonseca opted to skip the Asian swing as he rested up before the final leg of his maiden season on the ATP Tour. There have been highlights, with the Brazilian securing his first ATP title in Buenos Aires and getting through to the third-round of both Roland Garros and Wimbledon. He will hope for more consistency in terms of overall results, but the precocious youngster is now within sight of the top 40 of the world rankings.
Botic van de Zandschulp is his first-round opponent. The Dutchman did not enjoy the best of times in Asia as he lost three of his four matches. He was defeated in the first-round of Chengdu and Shanghai and could not get out of the qualifying stages for the China Open.
These two played each other for the first time in September 2024 at the Davis Cup with Fonseca, who was just 18 at the time, defeating Van de Zandschulp indoors in straight sets. The Brazilian is well placed to notch up another victory here.
