Joao Fonseca returns to Buenos Aires as the defending champion, having won his first ATP title at the event last year, beating Francisco Cerundolo in the final. The Brazilian has struggled with a back problem during the start of this season, which forced him to withdraw from a couple of events. He goes up against Alejandro Tabilo. The Chilean picked up a win in the previous round after defeating Facundo Diaz Acosta in straight sets. Tabilo edged a tight first set and broke at the start of the second as he won 7-6 (5) 6-3.
He leads the head-to-head after beating a 17-year-old Fonseca in the quarter-final stage of the Bucharest Open nearly two years ago. Fonseca has stated that he has returned to full fitness, but he could be tested by the dangerous Tabilo.
