It was heartbreak for Jessica Pegula at the US Open in 2024. The Buffalo native was beaten narrowly by Aryna Sabalenka in the final, losing 7-5, 7-5. Whilst the defeat was in straight sets, the margins were fine. But it will at least have spurred Pegula on to go one better this time around at Flushing Meadows.
She faces Mayar Sherif in round one, a former top 50 player but one who has never reached the second round of the US Open. The Egyptian is a huge underdog heading into this one and understandably so. Pegula is by far the stronger player of the two and has the crowd on her side.
In the end, this should turn out to be a comprehensive victory for USA’s Pegula, so back her to make it through in straight sets.
