Jessica Pegula got through her third three set match in a row to clinch her place in the semi-finals of the China Open. The American squandered a set point as her opponent Emma Navarro took the first set on a tiebreak. However, Pegula began to dominate against a faltering Navarro in the next two sets to win 6-7 6-2 6-1.
She will now face Linda Noskova. The Czech made it through to the semi-finals of a WTA 1000 event for the first time after a straight sets win over Great Britain’s Sonay Kartal. The 20-year-old did not have things all her own way, with Kartal breaking back in the middle of the first set and going 3-1 up in the second, but Noskova found a way to get it done, winning 6-3 6-4.
The head-to-head is 1-1 and Noskova leads 1-0 on hard courts. Their two previous matches have taken place this year, with Noskova winning in Dubai and Pegula claiming victory in Bad Homburg.
Noskova’s aggression and flair could hand her an early advantage, but Pegula has found form and her experience, tactical variety and consistency makes her the favourite to come through this one.
