Jessica Pegula produced a dominant second-round performance against Sofia Kenin, cruising to a 6-3 6-1 victory in only 56 minutes. Pegula was exceptional behind her first serve, losing just three points and never facing a break point, while repeatedly putting Kenin under pressure on return. The American has reached round three without dropping a set and continues to look extremely comfortable on the New York hard courts. She had opened the tournament with a 6-3 6-2 victory over Elena-Gabriela Ruse. Pegula had entered the US Open with plenty of confidence after reaching the final of the Cincinnati Open.

Leylah Fernandez was similarly convincing in round two, defeating Mananchaya Sawangkaew in straight sets. The Canadian converted six of her eight break point opportunities and increasingly took control after a competitive opening set to win 6-4 6-1. Fernandez began her campaign by beating Shuai Zhang 6-3 6-2 and has now dropped only 10 games across four sets in New York.

Pegula leads the head-to-head 3-1 and comfortably won their most recent encounter in Miami earlier this season. The world number three’s serving numbers and overall level through two rounds give her a clear advantage.
