Jessica Pegula vs Coco Gauff prediction

Jessica Pegula ended Aryna Sabalenka’s unbeaten run in Wuhan as she defeated the world number one in a dramatic semi-final. Sabalenka had won her previous 20 matches at the tournament and looked to have taken a big step into the final as she dominated the first set. Pegula fought back and forced a decider but looked beaten as Sabalenka established a 5-2 lead in the third. Nevertheless, the American reeled off four games in a row to serve for the match, only to be broken despite having a match point. Pegula would wrestle back control in the tiebreak to win 2-6 6-4 7-6.

She now takes on Coco Gauff who ended a run of three losses to Jasmine Paolini as she made her first final since her Roland Garros triumph in June. A bizarre match saw consecutive 11 breaks of serve at one point, with both players struggling in their respective serving games. Gauff committed seven double faults but continued to create opportunities as she won 6-4 6-3.

Pegula leads the head-to-head 4-2 and 3-1 on hard court. Their last match was at last year’s WTA Finals, with Gauff winning on that occasion. Both players are incredibly solid from the back of the court and are likely to slug it out. Gauff is yet to drop a set at this year's event but it is highly unlikely Pegula will roll over, given the nature of her victories this week and recent fine form.
