Jessica Pegula is seen as one of the main contenders to win the US Open this year, banishing the heartbreak of last year’s final and the Buffalo native has made a good start to the tournament. Pegula won 79% of her first service points and converted six of nine break points in a 6-0, 6-4 win against Mayar Sherif.
However, there was room for improvement in the performance, but expect Pegula to get sharper as the tournament goes on and eliminate the small mistakes. Anna Blinkova also dropped just four games in her straight sets victory in round one. But the 26-year-old has lost four times previously to Pegula, winning just once in comparison.
Whilst Blinkova is a strong hard court player who should cause the USA star more stress compared to Sherif, Pegula’s overwhelming quality, not to mention the home court advantage should win out and see her advance in straight sets.
