Jessica Bouzas Maneiro ended a four-match losing run in the first-round of the Merida Open as she comfortably got past Heather Watson. The pair exchanged breaks at the start of the match, but it was domination from the Spaniard after that as she won 10 of the next 11 service games to seal a 6-3 6-1 win.
She faces Magdalena Frech next. She was not close to her best but defeated Maria Timofeeva in straight sets. Frech was a break down at 4-3 in the first set but reeled off three straight games to pull ahead. A topsy-turvy second set saw eight breaks of serve overall, with Timofeeva squandering three set points and failing to serve out the set on two occasions. Frech went on to win 6-4 7-6 (6).
Frech will need to be much improved against Bouzas Maneiro, and the Spaniard will view this as fantastic opportunity to make a first quarter-final of the season.
