Jessica Bouzas Maneiro enters the Guangzhou Open as the top seed. The Spaniard’s form has been mostly average over the Asian swing, with three defeats from her seven matches. Her best result during that period was a third-round appearance at the China Open. Bouzas Maneiro’s best form of the season came in the summer, as she reached the fourth-round of Wimbledon and Cincinnati, along with a fine quarter-final run in Montreal. She also got through to two other WTA quarter-finals during the clay court season.
She goes up against Lulu Sun of New Zealand in round one. She comes into this on the back of two convincing qualifying victories. Furthermore, Sun also got through to the semi-finals of an ITF event in Jinan last week, while she also won a tournament in Jingshan last month. Her best form of the season has arrived during these last weeks.
Bouzas Maneiro is the clear favourite to come through this, but Sun will be quietly confident after a strong run in Asia, albeit at lower-level tournaments.
