Jessica Bouzas Maneiro won her opening match at the Canadian Open and was close to an upset in the second-round as she went a set and a break up against Elina Svitolina. However, Svitolina would come back to win in three sets. It’s been a difficult season for the Spaniard, with just four wins from 15 outdoor hard court matches, but she did perform at an encouraging level in Toronto. She will hope to maintain that standard when she begins her campaign in Cincinnati.
Her first-round opponent is Anna Bondar. The Hungarian reached her third straight final at the Hamburg Open, losing to Tamara Korpatsch. Bondar then competed in Toronto, winning her first-round match against Anhelina Kalinina but then losing to Elise Mertens in three sets. Bondar also made a strong start, but Mertens fought back to win 3-6 6-4 6-4.
