Jesper de Jong enters the main draw as a lucky loser after Hubert Hurkacz was forced to pull out of the tournament due to an ongoing back issue which forced the Pole to also withdraw from the Libema Open last week. De Jong lost in the final stage of qualifying to Laslo Djere. He did play in Rosmalen last week, taking the first set against Reilly Opelka in the first-round but going on to lose in three.
De Jong is up against Tomas Machac, a player who has really suffered with injuries during the campaign. He retired midway through his match with Quentin Halys in the first-round of Roland Garros and makes his return to the tour here. Machac has shown how good he can be this season, having won the Mexican Open in the middle of February, but he is struggling to maintain his fitness consistently.
They have not played on the main tour, but Machac has beaten De Jong twice on the Challenger Tour and once in qualifying for the Australian Open three years ago. As long as the Czech is fit and ready, he will be the heavy favourite to make it through.
